Each painting I create begins with sketching out ideas, with pencil, pen, ink, marker, charcoal, crayon, pencil crayon - anything to explore the idea. I usually paint in series so the idea, an expression, a motif has to be strong enough to sustain not just a single painting, but an entire series of paintings and still retain that initial freshness and excitement. The search for that rare composition that seizes me and demands to be set to canvas is why I spend so much time sketching ideas beforehand, filling endless sketchbooks and pads of newsprint in search of those rare compositions at just work.
